A painful past and an unknown future. This is my story: I grew up in the harshness of the Moroccan desert, carrying the wounds of a father’s absence and the poverty of life, yet I clung to the dream of education as a passage toward a dignified life. The pages of the book recount my ordeal with the false promises of relatives and the disappointments of hard labor, then my drift toward the abyss of illegal immigration in two perilous journeys swimming across the sea toward Europe, only to meet with failure and deportation at their end. From the depths of these bitter experiences, where I present at the conclusion of my journey a precious testament: that true wisdom lies in visiting the hospital to know the value of health, the prison to understand the meaning of freedom, and the cemetery to remember the inevitability of fate and the purpose of life. It is a journey of resilience in the face of cruelty, a desperate search for dignity, and extracting wisdom from the most bitter of lessons.
